Butterfly Valve Technical Overview
Butterfly valves are selected for on/off isolation and flow regulation service in pipeline systems where compact face-to-face dimensions, low weight, and fast quarter-turn operation are required. The rotating disc design provides full closure in a 90° turn, making butterfly valves the preferred choice for large-diameter, low-to-medium pressure applications in water treatment, HVAC, cooling water, fire protection, and general process industries. Orbital butterfly valves extend conventional performance through a cam-action disc movement that separates opening/closing rotation from seating contact — eliminating seat friction during disc travel and generating a perpendicular seating force on final closure for consistent metal-to-metal shutoff across extended service life.
The orbital seating mechanism addresses the primary failure mode of standard concentric and double-offset butterfly valves: progressive seat wear caused by disc-to-seat sliding contact during every open and close cycle. By lifting the disc away from the seat at the initiation of opening and returning it via a perpendicular cam path on closure, seat contact is limited exclusively to the final seating position — preserving sealing geometry under high-cycle duty and in service conditions involving abrasive media, scaling fluids, or frequent operation. This design also reduces actuator torque requirements compared to friction-dependent seating designs, enabling smaller actuator selection and lower energy consumption in automated service.
Cast steel bodies (WCB, CF8, CF8M, WC6) cover the full range of general process, utility, and moderate-temperature industrial applications from −29°C to 425°C. Gear operators are standard for DN200 and above, where handwheel torque becomes impractical under full differential pressure; electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic actuator configurations are available for automated service. HD Flowtech orbital butterfly valves are manufactured to API 609 Category B with shell and seat testing per API 598, available in double-flanged end configuration to ASME B16.5 and EN 1092-1, with optional locking device, bottom drain connection, and position indicator as standard features.
