Butterfly Valve Technical Overview
Triple offset butterfly valves with pneumatic fail-safe actuation are selected for critical isolation and ESD service in corrosive, high-temperature, and offshore process applications where zero leakage, reliable emergency closure, and long service life under demanding conditions are required. The triple offset cam-action sealing mechanism eliminates disc-to-seat friction throughout the operating stroke — providing consistent zero-leakage metal-to-metal shut-off and extending seat life far beyond concentric and double offset designs in high-cycle and critical process service.
Pneumatic actuators with integral air reservoirs are specified for ESD and fail-safe applications where reliable valve closure must be guaranteed even on complete loss of instrument air supply. The stored air volume provides sufficient energy to drive the actuator to the fail-safe position independently of the plant air system — a mandatory safety feature for offshore platform ESD valves, fire and gas system isolation valves, and process protection duty under functional safety standards IEC 61508 and IEC 61511.
Stainless steel body construction (CF8M, CF8) is selected for corrosive process service where carbon steel body materials would be compromised by the process fluid — chemical processing, offshore topside piping, and corrosive hydrocarbon service. Metal seats (Stellite overlay, hard-faced) are standard for triple offset butterfly valves, providing zero-leakage performance at high temperatures and in erosive service conditions where soft seat materials cannot maintain tight shut-off. Design standards API 609 and EN 593 govern triple offset butterfly valve design and performance requirements for critical process and pipeline service.
