Strainer Technical Overview
Y-type strainers are selected for inline filtration service in pipeline and process systems where downstream equipment must be protected from particulate contamination, weld slag, scale, and pipeline debris. Selection criteria include pressure class, body material compatibility with the process fluid, screen mesh size relative to the particle size requiring removal, and pressure drop across the screen element under full flow conditions.
Forged steel Y-type strainers are specified for high-pressure service at PN63 and above, where cast body construction is not suitable due to pressure class or material homogeneity requirements. The Y-pattern design is preferred over T-pattern basket strainers in continuous high-flow service where pressure drop must be minimized — the angled screen orientation provides a larger filtration area relative to the pipe bore, reducing flow velocity across the screen and extending cleaning intervals. Basket strainers are selected where higher dirt-holding capacity is required, typically in low-to-medium pressure service with high particulate loads.
Screen mesh selection is determined by the particle size requiring removal and the pressure drop budget available — 40 mesh (400 micron) for coarse pipeline debris, 60 mesh (250 micron) for general process protection, and 100 mesh (150 micron) for fine filtration upstream of control valves and instrumentation. Body material selection follows standard process piping criteria — carbon steel (A105) for general service, alloy steel (F11, F22) for high-temperature steam and process applications, and stainless steel (F304, F316) for corrosive media and clean process service.
