HD Flowtech cast steel OS&Y gate valves are engineered for full-bore isolation service in general process, fire protection, and industrial pipeline systems. The WCB carbon steel cast body provides reliable structural integrity at Class 300 operating pressures, suitable for process plant isolation, steam distribution, cooling water systems, and fire protection sprinkler supply mains. The Outside Screw and Yoke (OS&Y) design positions the stem threads outside the valve body and above the packing — preventing process fluid contact with the stem threads, eliminating thread corrosion and galling in corrosive or dirty service environments, and providing immediate visual open/closed position indication from the stem travel distance above the yoke. The bolted bonnet allows internal access for wedge and seat inspection and maintenance without removing the valve from the pipeline. A rising stem with handwheel provides precise manual actuation and clear visual position confirmation — the exposed threaded stem rising fully out of the yoke in the open position confirms full-bore flow without instrumentation. Flanged end connections to ASME B16.5 Class 300 ensure direct integration into standard process and fire protection pipeline flange systems.

Gate Valve Technical Overview

How to Choose the Right Gate Valve for Industrial Applications

OS&Y (Outside Screw and Yoke) gate valves are selected for full-bore isolation service in process plant piping, fire protection systems, and industrial installations where stem thread protection from process fluid and clear visual position indication are required. The outside screw design keeps stem threads permanently above the packing and outside the valve body — eliminating thread contact with process fluid and providing unambiguous open/closed status from the stem position without requiring separate position indicators or instrumentation.

NFPA 13 and FM Global requirements mandate OS&Y gate valves for fire protection sprinkler supply isolation in commercial and industrial buildings, where the visible stem position provides fire service personnel with immediate valve status confirmation during emergency response. In process plant applications, the OS&Y design is preferred for steam, corrosive, and dirty service where internal stem thread corrosion and galling are concerns with inside-screw (IS&Y) designs — the external threads remain accessible for inspection, lubrication, and maintenance throughout the valve’s service life.

Bolted bonnet construction is standard for Class 150–600 OS&Y gate valves, allowing wedge and seat maintenance without pipeline removal. Body material selection — WCB for standard process and fire protection service up to 425°C, alloy steel (WC6, WC9) for high-temperature steam applications, and stainless steel (CF8, CF8M) for corrosive media — is determined by operating temperature, fluid type, and system corrosion requirements. Design standards API 600 and ASME B16.34 govern process service gate valves, with NFPA 13 and UL 262 applying for fire protection service applications
