Ball Valve Technical Overview
Cast steel trunnion mounted ball valves with pneumatic fail-safe actuation are selected for full-bore isolation and ESD service in natural gas transmission pipelines, compressor stations, and distribution systems where automated remote operation, reliable emergency closure, and API 6D compliance are required. The yellow epoxy coating identifies these valves as natural gas service components in compliance with gas industry color-coding conventions, while the full-bore design ensures unrestricted gas flow and pigging tool passage for inline inspection and cleaning operations mandatory for transmission pipeline maintenance.
Pneumatic actuators with integral air reservoirs are specified for gas pipeline ESD and sectioning valves where reliable fail-safe closure must be guaranteed even on complete loss of instrument air supply. The stored air volume in the reservoir provides sufficient energy to drive the actuator to the closed position independently of the plant air system — a mandatory safety feature for gas transmission pipeline emergency isolation where valve closure on instrument air failure protects against uncontrolled gas release. SCADA integration enables remote monitoring and operation of pipeline sectioning valves from control centers, supporting rapid response to pipeline incidents and planned maintenance isolation.
Trunnion mounted construction is standard for large-bore gas pipeline ball valves at DN150 and above, where the trunnion support reduces seat load and operating torque under pipeline pressure — ensuring reliable pneumatic actuation and long seat life throughout the valve’s service life. Body material selection — WCB for standard gas transmission service, LCB for cold climate and low-temperature pipeline installations, and duplex grades for sour gas and corrosive environments — is determined by gas composition, operating temperature, and pipeline burial environment. Design standard API 6D governs trunnion mounted ball valves for gas pipeline service, with ISO 14313 as the international equivalent.
