Steel and Metallurgy Valve Supply: What We've Actually Delivered
Steel plants are one of the more demanding environments for industrial valves — not because of any single extreme condition, but because of the sheer variety of services running through the same facility. Blast furnace cooling water, coal gas distribution networks, oxygen supply lines, high-temperature combustion air, slag handling systems — each has its own pressure class, material requirement, and actuator specification. A supplier who can handle the full range is worth more than one who’s good at one category.

Integrated Steel Mills and Blast Furnace Projects
The largest contracts in our steel industry reference list tend to come from blast furnace construction and upgrade projects, where the valve scope covers multiple systems — furnace body cooling water, circulating water pump stations, slag handling, gas networks, and oxygen supply — often split across separate packages within the same overall project.
Hebei Tianzhu Steel (urban relocation blast furnace project, via MCC Jingcheng Engineering) was one of our most comprehensive steel plant deliveries. HD Valves supplied three separate contract packages for the same project — blast furnace body valves including conical hard-seal butterfly valves, two-way plug valves, ball valves, and electromagnetic valves; clean water system valves including electric and manual butterfly valves, gate valves, and ball valves; and a supplementary furnace body water valve package. Each package had different system requirements and material specifications — cooling water, gas, and instrument air circuits running in parallel through the same construction programme.
Tianjin Tiangang United Special Steel (1250m³ blast furnace upgrade, via China Steel Engineering Design Institute) — two separate valve packages for the same furnace upgrade: blast furnace body water system valves including ball valves, metal hard-seal butterfly valves, three-way stainless steel ball valves, and pneumatic metal hard-seal butterfly valves; and circulating water pump room valves including butterfly valves, limited-displacement expansion joints, slow-closing check butterfly valves, swing check valves, Y-strainers, pressure reducing valves, and float valves.
Hebei Huaxi Special Steel (ironmaking EPC, via China Steel Equipment) — multiple contracts across the same project covering slag pump station and circulating pump station valves, and medium pipeline network valves. The pipeline network scope included pump control valves, ball valves, butterfly valves, compressed air globe valves, steam globe valves, pressure reducing valves, and hydraulic nitrogen regulators — a range that reflects how many different utility services run through a modern ironmaking facility.
Henan Jiyuan Steel (capacity replacement No.3 blast furnace) — butterfly valves, ball valves, check valves, and steam traps for blast furnace systems.
Tianjin New Tiangang United Special Steel (No.2 1080m³ blast furnace overhaul) — water system butterfly valves for the furnace overhaul programme.
Hunan Valin Xiangtan Steel — Ongoing Supply Relationship
Hunan Valin Xiangtan Steel (Xiangsteel) stands out as our most active repeat customer in the steel sector. HD Valves supplied multiple contracts across 2019 through 2021, covering a wide range of valve types for different plant systems:
- Electric gate valves, manual butterfly valves, electric butterfly valves, and electric spectacle valves for general plant service
- Metal hard-seal butterfly valves, spectacle valves, and insert plate valves for coal gas systems
- Coal gas cut-off blind plate valves, coal gas cut-off valves, nitrogen branch cut-off valves, and pressurised tapping gate valves for gas network maintenance
- High-pressure gate valves, liquid-controlled butterfly valves, and coal gas gate valves for high-pressure service
- Intelligent electric flanged triple-offset butterfly valves for process control
- FEP-lined butterfly valves for corrosive service

The breadth of valve types across these contracts — from standard carbon steel gate valves through to specialised coal gas isolation valves and corrosion-resistant lined butterfly valves — reflects the complexity of running a large integrated steel mill where multiple fluid services are in continuous operation.
Coal Gas and Combustion Gas Systems
Coal gas networks are one of the more technically demanding valve applications in steel plants. The combination of flammable gas, positive pressure operation, and the consequences of leakage means that valve selection, actuator specification, and sealing integrity all carry higher stakes than standard utility service.
Jiangsu Yonggang Group — explosion-proof electric butterfly valves at DN3000 for a large-bore coal gas application, and self-resetting blowout relief safety valves for gas pressure management. Large-bore gas valves at this size require careful consideration of actuator torque, body structural loading, and seat sealing performance under operating pressure.
Changzhou Dongfang Special Steel — pneumatic gas control valves and electric control valves for coal gas regulation systems across two separate contracts, plus butterfly valves and electric insert plate valves for system modifications. The 50MW power generation project at this facility also required electric control valves, electric valves, gas valves, and manual valves across a broader scope.
Shandong Taishan Steel Group (Taishan Cold-Rolled, Taishan Coking, Taishan Steel) — spectacle valves, butterfly valves, and pneumatic rapid coal gas cut-off valves for metallurgical gas systems across three related companies at the same industrial complex.
Xinyu Steel (coke oven gas desulphurisation project) — flanged butterfly valves, check valves, gate valves, globe valves, and wafer butterfly valves across two contract packages for the gas processing system.
Oxygen Service
Oxygen systems in steel plants require a specific approach to valve selection — carbon contamination and ignition risk mean that standard carbon steel valves are not appropriate, and cleaning requirements for oxygen service are more stringent than general industrial practice.
Hebei Shijiazhuang Steel (HBIS Group environmental relocation and upgrade) — spectacle valves, explosion-proof triple-offset metal hard-seal butterfly valves, oxygen globe valves, oxygen filters, and oxygen flame arrestors for the rolling mill valve scope. Oxygen service valves need to be cleaned and certified — material selection and internal surface finish are engineering requirements, not procurement preferences.
Tangshan Yanshan Steel (oxygen plant pressure regulation station upgrade) — oxygen globe valves and oxygen ball valves for the pressure regulation system, where correct material specification and cleaning to oxygen service standards are the primary requirements.
Water Treatment and Utility Systems
Baowu Water Technology — a comprehensive valve package covering electric ball valves, manual butterfly valves, electric butterfly valves, micro-resistance slow-closing check valves, pressure relief valves, sludge drain valves, exhaust valves, and dual-flange limited-displacement expansion joints. Water treatment in steel plants handles cooling water, process water, and wastewater streams that carry suspended solids and scale — valve selection needs to account for erosion and fouling as well as pressure and temperature.
Shaanxi Steel Hanzhong (central water treatment, post-disaster reconstruction) — quick-opening dual-direction hard-seal electric butterfly valves, cast iron copper-inlaid sluice gates with hand/electric dual-purpose actuators, slow-closing butterfly check valves, multi-function pump control valves, electromagnetic valves, and electric modulating soft-seal butterfly valves for the central water treatment facility.
Flue Gas Treatment and Environmental Upgrades
Steel industry environmental compliance has driven significant investment in flue gas treatment, dust collection, and emissions control — all of which require valves suited to hot, corrosive, and particulate-laden gas streams.
Xinyu Steel (4.3m coke oven environmental and energy-saving upgrade) — check valves, ball valves, and gate valves for the environmental upgrade programme.
Shaanxi Longmen Steel (sintering machine head dust collection resource utilisation project) — pneumatic control valves and pneumatic switching valves for the dust collection and gas treatment system.
Ordos Xijin Mining Metallurgy (high-quality ferrosilicon capacity upgrade) — high-temperature metal hard-seal triple-offset butterfly valves at DN3700 for a flue gas system handling extreme temperatures at very large bore sizes. At this scale, the combination of high temperature, large bore, and gas-tight sealing requirements pushes into custom engineering territory — standard industrial butterfly valves are not appropriate for this application.
Hebei Donghai Special Steel — multiple maintenance and spare parts contracts across 2020 and 2021 covering pneumatic butterfly valves, electric butterfly valves, dual-direction pressure butterfly valves, pneumatic quick-cut valves, pneumatic ball valves, and manual bleed valves for ironmaking plant systems.
What Comes Up Repeatedly in Steel Plant Valve Scopes
After 150+ contracts across steel and metallurgy projects, certain valve types and specifications appear consistently regardless of which facility or system is involved.
Coal gas isolation — blind plate (spectacle) valves and knife gate valves for positive gas isolation on blast furnace gas, coke oven gas, and converter gas lines. These are safety-critical applications where positive isolation — not just shutoff — is the requirement.
Large-bore butterfly valves for gas networks — electric and pneumatic triple-offset metal-seated butterfly valves from DN500 to DN3700 for gas distribution headers. Explosion-proof actuator packages are standard for all coal gas service locations.
Blast furnace cooling water — ball valves, butterfly valves, check valves, and pump control valves for cooling water circulation systems. High flow rates and the consequences of cooling water failure make pump trip protection valve selection important.
Oxygen service valves — globe valves and ball valves cleaned and certified for oxygen service. Carbon contamination in oxygen lines is a fire risk — this is an application where cutting corners on material specification or cleaning standards has real consequences.
Water treatment and utility — butterfly valves, gate valves, check valves, and expansion joints for cooling water treatment, wastewater, and utility service. Rubber-lined or stainless steel construction for systems carrying scale, solids, or treatment chemicals.
High-temperature flue gas and combustion air — metal hard-seal butterfly valves rated for elevated temperatures, where soft seat designs would fail rapidly. Triple-offset geometry is standard for cycling service in hot gas applications.
