Chemical Industry Valve Supply: What We've Actually Delivered

Chemical plants are a different beast from power plants when it comes to valve procurement. The fluid variety alone — corrosive media, high-pressure gas, cryogenic service, slurry lines — means you can’t just run through a standard catalogue. You need a supplier who understands what’s actually flowing through the pipe and what that means for material selection, sealing design, and actuator specification.

Coal Chemical and Coal-to-Gas

This is where the bulk of our chemical industry reference list sits, which reflects where a lot of China’s industrial valve demand has been concentrated over the past two decades.

 

Shaanxi Longmen Coal Chemical is probably our most extensive single-customer relationship in this sector. HD Valves supplied valves across multiple contracts for their 4 million tonne/year coking technical upgrade — stainless steel valves, welded globe valves, gate valves, check valves, butterfly valves, ball valves, water-seal valves, high-pressure valves, and more. Individual contracts ranged from 1 million to 8 million, with cumulative supply across all phases running into the tens of millions.

 

Inner Mongolia Heimaozi Coal Chemical was another significant relationship — multiple contracts in 2019 and 2020 covering butterfly valves, blind plate valves, high-temperature alloy steel valves, stainless steel valves, and chemical product valves. The largest single contract was 15 million in 2022, covering electric control butterfly valves, blind plate valves, gate valves, globe valves, check valves, and triple-offset metal-seated valves.

 

Shaanxi Future Energy Chemical  — three separate contracts in 2013 for electric gate valves, gate valves, and globe valves for gasification and synthesis systems. These are the kinds of high-pressure, high-temperature valve applications where material traceability and pressure testing documentation aren’t optional.

 

Datang International Fuxin Coal-to-Gas (Liaoning) has been an ongoing customer across multiple years — water supply underground pipeline gate valves and silent check valves, ball valves and globe valves under framework contracts, with individual contracts from 1 million up to 3 million. Framework supply relationships like this are a good indicator of how specification and delivery performance holds up over time.

 

Datang International Keshiketeng Coal-to-Gas (Inner Mongolia) involved valve supply across several system areas — train loading station valves, low-temperature methanol wash regeneration zone spares, medium-pressure zone spares, and heat exchanger station pipeline spares. Different systems, different pressure classes, different materials — the kind of scope that tests whether a supplier actually understands process chemistry or just knows how to fill out a purchase order.

Fertiliser and Synthetic Ammonia

Henan Jinda Di Chemical is our most active repeat chemical customer in recent years. Starting with district heating valves, the relationship expanded across multiple projects — electric butterfly valves for synthetic ammonia systems, manual butterfly valves, ball valves and eccentric ball valves for soda ash production, gate valves for brine treatment, and multiple additional contracts covering maintenance and process modifications. More than ten separate contracts across five years, covering a wide range of valve types and system applications.

Zhongxiang Jinying Energy (300 thousand tonne/year synthetic ammonia) — medium and low pressure valve package covering gate valves, welded gate valves, globe valves, instrument valves, safety valves, soft-seat and hard-seat butterfly valves, electric butterfly valves, micro-resistance slow-closing check valves, and plastic-lined valves. The kind of comprehensive first-fill scope that requires coordinating multiple valve types in a single delivery programme.

Shijiazhuang Baipo Zhengyuan Fertiliser — electric welded valve package for a fertiliser plant where corrosion-resistant materials and tight shutoff specifications are the primary drivers.

PVC and Chlor-Alkali

Qinghai Salt Lake Haina Chemical (PVC integrated project) was a multi-contract supply across several phases — butterfly valves, needle valves, steam traps, globe valves, check valves, and gate valves for the caustic soda and VCM units, followed by additional contracts for PVC unit valves and further phase deliveries. The chlor-alkali and VCM environment puts specific demands on valve materials — standard carbon steel doesn’t last long in these services.

 

Inner Mongolia Ordos Power Metallurgy Chlor-Alkali (PVC project) — hard-seal butterfly valves for the 400 thousand tonne/year PVC and 300 thousand tonne/year caustic soda project, gate valves for PVC Phase 2, and additional butterfly valves for the continued build-out. Multiple contracts across a long project timeline.

Specialty Chemical and New Materials

Hebei Jicheng New Materials became a regular customer with contracts running from 2020 through 2023 — gate valves, butterfly valves, ball valves, globe valves, check valves, steam traps, flanged sight glasses, pneumatic butterfly valves, liner diaphragm valves, and electric switching valves across more than ten separate orders. The breadth of valve types reflects the complexity of a specialty chemical plant’s utility and process systems.

 

Inner Mongolia Xinweiyuan Biochemical — multiple contracts from 2018 through 2021 covering antibiotic-grade valves, butterfly valves, check valves, ball valves, low-temperature ball valves, globe valves, gate valves, safety valves, expansion joints, and gas flow compensators. Biological and biochemical applications require hygienic-grade or specialised valve designs that sit outside the standard industrial catalogue.

 

Yanmei Lunan Chemical (caprolactam project, via Saiding Engineering) — stainless steel gate valves, check valves, and ball valves for the hydrogen peroxide unit main system, plus circulating water system butterfly valves and check valves. Hydrogen peroxide service has specific material requirements — contamination control and ignition risk make material selection non-negotiable.

 

Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry has been a framework customer across multiple contracts covering high-pressure ball valves, gate valves, check valves, globe valves, medium-pressure butterfly valves, and triple-offset butterfly valves. High-pressure coal chemical service — pressure classes above Class 600 — requires valves that are genuinely engineered for the application, not just rated for it on paper.

Coal Tar, Coal-to-Oil, and Coking

Shaanxi Donxin Yuan Chemical (via Hualv Engineering) — multiple contract packages covering gate valves, globe valves, check valves, ball valves, electric butterfly valves, and gate plate valves for coal gas desulphurisation and hydrogen production units, public works, and auxiliary systems. Several contracts across different phases of the same project — the kind of involvement that comes from performing well on the first package.

 

Shaanxi Coal Chemical Group / Shengbang Chemical Technology (50万 tonne/year coal tar lightening project) — gate valves, globe valves, and check valves across three contract packages.

 

Shanxi Dongyi Coal Power Aluminium Coal Chemical (coking project) — gate valves and globe valves, check valves, safety valves, Y-strainers, steam traps, and pressure reducing valves across two contracts.

What Comes Up Repeatedly in Chemical Industry Valve Scopes

After working across coal chemical, fertiliser, PVC, chlor-alkali, and specialty chemical projects, certain valve types and specifications show up in almost every scope.

 

High-pressure gate and globe valves — carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel in pressure classes from Class 150 through Class 1500. Coal chemical gasification zones regularly require Class 600 and above, with full material traceability and pressure test certification as standard.

 

Stainless steel valves for corrosive service — CF8M (316SS) and CF3M (316L) body and trim for acid, chlorine, ammonia, and wet gas applications. Material selection here is not interchangeable with carbon steel equivalents — the fluid chemistry drives the spec.

 

PTFE-lined and rubber-lined butterfly valves — for slurry, acid, and corrosive liquid service where metal-to-fluid contact needs to be eliminated. Common in PVC, chlor-alkali, and fertiliser plant utility systems.

 

Blind plate (spectacle) valves and knife gate valves — standard in coal gas, coal tar, and coking systems where positive isolation of gas lines is a safety requirement, not just an operational one.

 

Low-temperature valves — for cryogenic and LNG service, ammonia storage, and low-temperature methanol wash systems in coal-to-gas plants. Body and trim materials, seat design, and packing selection all change below -20°C.

 

Explosion-proof electric and pneumatic actuators — required across coal gas, solvent, and flammable media systems. The actuator specification has to match the hazardous area classification of the installation point, not just the valve body rating.

 

What Chemical Plants Actually Need From a Valve Supplier

After 250+ contracts across chemical sub-sectors, a few things come up consistently.

 

Material selection matters more than pressure class. A valve rated for the right pressure class but in the wrong material will fail faster in chemical service than in almost any other industry. Stainless steel CF8M, Hastelloy, PTFE-lined, rubber-lined — the fluid drives the material, and the supplier needs to understand why.

 

Corrosive media requires documented material certification. In chlor-alkali, PVC, ammonia, and acid service, MTRs and heat number traceability aren’t a bureaucratic requirement — they’re the difference between a valve that lasts and one that doesn’t.

 

Coal chemical systems mix pressure classes and fluid types in the same plant. A single coal chemical facility might need Class 1500 gate valves for high-pressure gasification zones, PN10 butterfly valves for circulating water, and PTFE-lined ball valves for acid dosing — all in the same order. Sourcing from a manufacturer who can handle that range is more efficient than splitting across multiple suppliers.

 

Actuated valves need to be specified together with the valve body. Explosion-proof actuators for coal gas service, pneumatic actuators for SIS applications, electric actuators for remote operation — the actuator specification is part of the valve specification, not an afterthought.

 

Framework contracts work well for chemical plant maintenance. Several of our chemical customers shifted to framework supply after initial project delivery — Datang Fuxin, Hebei Jicheng, Henan Jinda Di. It reduces procurement lead time for maintenance and keeps valve specifications consistent across the plant.
